My Two Favorite Wars
The Civil War |
The main causes of the Civil War were conflicts between the North and South on; industry vs. agriculture, slavery, the Tariff of Abominations, using tax money to build national roads, the Fugitive Slave Law, and Abraham Lincoln' election.
The North's main advantages were their economy, population, industry, railroads, and navy. The South's main advantages were their leadership (maintaing Robert E. Lee as general throughout the whole war), geography, and that they were fighting a defensive war.

The Civil War accounted for the most American deaths out of any of the wars our country has been involved in, followed by my second favorite war- World War II.
World War II
World War II is so interesting to me because no one saw the rise of Hitler as an issue until he started executing Jewish people and invading other countries, even though he had been publicly claiming his intentions and rallying support for many years before the outbreak of the war. I think that due to issues such as the Holocaust and Pearl Harbor- events that struck home with most Americans- this is also the most desired war to study from a student's perspective. In addition to bringing up history, we bring up issues of humanity (if dropping nuclear warfare on innocent people is okay), morality, civil rights, and when it is the right time to take action or stand up for others. I've always been particularly fascinated with the Holocaust, as it amazes me that no one stopped Hitler before six million Jewish people were killed.
This is the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which has many great resources about what the Holocaust meant for Jewish people, and many personal accounts from survivors.
